  5.     Disguise us at my lodging, and return,
  6.     All in an hour.

  8. Gratiano    We have not made good preparation.
  9.  
  10. Salerio    We have not spoke us yet of torch-bearers.
  11.  
  12. Solanio    'Tis vile unless it may be quaintly ordered,
  13.     And better in my mind not undertook.
  14.  
  15. Lorenzo    'Tis now but four o'clock; we have two hours
  16.     To furnish us.
  17.  
  18.                      Enter LAUNCELOT, with a letter.

  20.                     Friend Launcelot, what's the news?

  22. Launcelot    An it shall please you to break up this, it shall seem to 
  23.     signify.

  25. Lorenzo    I know the hand; in faith, 'tis a fair hand,
  26.     And whiter than the paper it writ on
  27.     Is the fair hand that writ.

  29. Gratiano                                    Love news, in faith.

  33. Lorenzo    Whither goest thou?

  35. Launcelot    Marry, sir, to bid my old master the Jew to sup tonight with 
  36.     my new master the Christian.

  38. Lorenzo    Hold, here, take this.

  40.                                 Tell gentle Jessica
  41.     I will not fail her - speak it privately.
  42.                                                         [Exit LAUNCELOT.
  43.     Go, gentlemen,
  44.     Will you prepare you for this masque tonight?
  45.     I am provided of a torch-bearer.

  47. Salerio    Ay, marry, I'll be gone about it straight.

  49. Solanio    And so will I.

  51. Lorenzo                        Meet me and Gratiano
  52.     At Gratiano's lodging some hour hence.

  54. Salerio    'Tis good we do so.
  55.                                             [Exeunt SALERIO and SOLANIO.

  57. Gratiano    Was not that letter from fair Jessica?

  59. Lorenzo    I must needs tell thee all. She hath directed
  60.     How I shall take her from her father's house,
  61.     What gold and jewels she is furnished with,
  62.     What page's suit she hath in readiness.
  63.     If e'er the Jew her father come to heaven,
  64.     It will be for his gentle daughter's sake;
  65.     And never dare misfortune cross her foot,
  66.     Unless she do it under this excuse:
  67.     That she is issue to a faithless Jew.
  68.     Come, go with me, peruse this as thou goest.
  69.     Fair Jessica shall be my torch-bearer.
